I make short films and images that explore local histories and capture the beauty of everyday people. I hand process my super 8 and 35 mm film using spices, coffee, flowers and herbs. The seasonality of the ingredients and site specific nature of the eco-friendly chemistry that I create in the dark room is very much connected to my culinary practice, involving measurement, assembly, and experimentation.
I also facilitate culinary film processing workshops via Tesh Ciné Lab in Leimert Park, California and Gondar, Ethiopia.
Shout out to my parents Azalu Mekonnen and Teshager Abegaze Gebere, my mentors Lisa Marr and Paolo Davanzo from the Echo Park Film Center, and my ancestors for lighting the path.
